The fish was an early symbol of Christianity, since the Greek word for fish, ICTHUS, is an acronym for the Greek phrase Iesous Christos Theou Huias Soter, which means “Jesus Christ, of God, the Son, Savior.”  It was written as graffiti and was used as a secret password when Christians were being persecuted by the Romans.  Source: 1000 Bible Facts
