Meditations

“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest – and poverty will overcome you like a thief.” (Prov 24:33-34) “Land that drinks in the rain and which produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed, receives the blessing of God.” (Heb 6:7) “I have come so that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:9-10)

By the very laws of nature, there is no other way to arrive on this planet except by being born of a mother. And similarly, Jesus explained to Nicodemus the same law regarding a person’s entry into God’s realm, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again,” (John 3:3) and, “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (14:6). “But just as newborn infants cannot survive without nourishment and growth, newborn children of God also must develop spiritually in order to survive Satan’s attacks.  And just as an infant craves being fed, no disciple of the Lord can remain long at one level of maturity without craving more knowledge about their God. Does an infant feed itself? Of course not, and it is God alone who enables us to progress as we yield to Him, receive His word, and act upon it. ‘You yourselves are being built up like living stones as a spiritual house.’ (1 Pet 2:5)” (Warren Wiersbe)

And this really doesn’t happen because we put some great amount of effort into it. When we taste something good, we have no problem reaching for it again. Can you eat one potato chip? I can’t. I don’t think Peter would have been able to either, “Like newborn babies crave their mother’s milk, we crave pure spiritual milk because we have tasted that the Lord is good.” (1 Pet 2:2-3) ” ‘But solid food is for the more mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.’ (Heb 5:14) Have you leveled off? Become satisfied with a little bit of Bible knowledge? Do you hunger for the grace you’ve already been given to continue to do more transforming work in places where you are lacking in maturity? The cross of Jesus welcomes your honesty because as soon as you confess your sins, they are covered by His blood. Your salvation was secured when you called upon His name – now enjoy living as abundantly as He wishes for you.” (Paul D. Tripp) It takes grace to admit how much you still need grace. Ask and you shall receive! (Matt 7:7-11 and 1 John 1:9)
