The “inn” in Luke 2 is translated from a word that could refer to a guest room adjoining a private home, in this case perhaps some relative of Joseph or Mary. Because the room was already occupied, the pair had to lodge in the stable. This would explain the “house” they were living in when visited by the magi (Matthew 2:11)
